I can report that ducks and swans sleep longer on a Friday morning. At 8.30 I passed eight sleeping ducks and two swans all in a neat and tidy row along the canal bank. Lucky ducks :)
And that got me thinking, why do ducks sleep in a row? The answer is that there are 2 guard ducks at each end of the row who sleep with one eye open and are fully aware of their surroundings. 50% of their brain is asleep and the other is totally alert and on the watching for danger. Isn't that clever?
